Washington DC (Storch Report) — One would think the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Maybus, would have enough on his plate protecting the United States from its enemies and training its sailors to avoid being captured by a rag-tag Iranian Navy than worrying about removing ‘man’ from all job titles to be politically correct.
Mabus has ordered the service to review all job titles and consider removing any reference to “man” in them which would require name-changes to nearly two dozen specialties, from airman to yeoman. According to the Navy Times, he ordered the scrubbing of ‘man’ as the force prepares to open the last remaining billets to women sailors in Marine ground combat elements and the Navy SEALs.
Perhaps he should begin with the renaming of woman and female and reconsider sailing into Manhattan for Fleet Week.
The move smacks of another Obamaism.
Mabus was quoted as saying, “As we achieve full integration of the force . . . this is an opportunity to update position titles and descriptions themselves to demonstrate through this language that women are included in these positions.”
He wants a report on this high priority order no later than April 1, 2016.
Mabus sent the directive to Chief of Naval Operations Adm John Richardson. A similar memo and mandate was sent to the Marine Corps commandant, asking for the same job title review.
There are some hallowed traditions and titles in the Navy like seaman which become difficult to change or replace with gender-neutral descriptors.
For example, I served in the Navy as a seaman, a yeoman and a personnel man, the latter has already been changed to personnel specialist.
A Fireman is being suggested to be Engineer.
Perhaps Midshipman at the Naval Academy should be called Midshipees.
There is little doubt in my mind that President Obama is behind this gender neutral move, for on Feb. 4, 2010, speaking at a prayer breakfast, he called a Navy Corpsman, a “Corpse-man.” (see video) As a non-military person, I’ll bet Obama could better handle, ‘Nurse,’ and avoid the embarrassment.
Urinals have already been removed from the Head on some ships to make them gender-integrated; I would suggest Head be re-named, powder room.
