Casting Couch Older Than Silent Movies, Reaches Far Beyond Hollywood

Hollywood CA (Storch Report) The Casting Couch and its symbolism of sex, power and money is as old, if not older, than silent movies.

According to Wikipedia, “the casting-couch mentality is the trading of sexual favors by an aspirant, apprentice employee, or subordinate to a superior in return for entry into an occupation, or for other career advancement within an organization.”

The term casting couch originated in the motion picture industry, with specific reference to couches in offices that be used for sexual activity between casting directors or film producers and aspiring actors.

It quickly spread to other industries besides entertainment, through careers which are highly desirable and traditionally difficult to break into.

Despite today’s ‘political correctness’ and progressive movement to right all wrongs within our society, it is as rampant as it always has been, from the Oval Office to the Board Room.

And it is of little shock value to see a growing list of women now directing allegations of sexual harassment at Harvey Weinstein, a Hollywood bonvivant powerhouse, heavy Dem contributor, and movie maker who has infiltrated every A list of influential power brokers that exists in the nation’s culture.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expelled Weinstein from the Academy in response to mounting allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him.

The Academy’s board said in a statement, “We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.

“What’s at issue here is deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society.  The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”

Hypocrisy has always ranked high among the Academy and to believe ‘complicity in sexually predatory behavior and work place harassment in our industry is over,’ is to beg the comment that if you believe this, I’ve got a bridge to sell you in New York.

Furthermore, if the Academy is, ‘working to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify,’ it raises questions about Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Mel Gibson?

The issues surrounding the ‘Casting Couch’ do not always just involve the predator, for if it did, and it resulted in a sexual act, it would be considered a non-consensual criminal act called rape.

Sexual harassment in the workplace, on the other hand, should be considered un-acceptable in today’s workplace environment and should be subject to termination.

Where the lines become fuzzy is in those industries such as entertainment where there is a created culture that fosters this form of behavior, and both parties agree to participate, ignoring their own and workplace ethical standards of conduct, and the Casting Couch symbolism exists.

To think that this form of human behavior can be eliminated is to believe that the world’s oldest profession – prostitution – can be policed out of existence.
