I agree that the people of a state should choose their senators in a special election. I believe that the 17th Amendment to the constitution contains the provision that the executives (governors) of the states are empowered to make temporary appointments to fill Senate vacancies. The appointments expire with the next general election. This seems to be an outmoded provision that originated prior to the popular election of senators. There may be a very few states that have some minor restrictions.
Will Congress do anything to revert to special elections to fill these vacancies? Politics being what it is and power and influence involved I doubt it.

I like the man also. I can't think of too many people I would rather share a few beers with. But restoring principals and terror free "peace"? For the purpose of brevity I won't go into the type of principals the Bush gang engaged in. Unfortunately his administration is the only one, in modern time, in which the US mainland was directly attacked. But of course that was Clinton's fault.
On a different subject and realizing that this is the season of miracles I can accept your statement in your December 7th article that Obama named Elliot Richardson as his Secretary of Commerce. Elliot Richardson died in 1999 and must have been resurrected. That's going to be some swearing in ceremony.
The View-really?

You're right, it's a Hail Mary pass. But what else is left? We are on the road to socialism, capitalism is a thing of the past for the immediate future with the incoming administration. The future says the Government is running today's business because, we the taxpayers, by government decree, will have an interest in a major portion of Wall Street, financial institutions, manufacturing and everything else but small business, which provides the major portion of jobs in this country. Perhaps the line being drawn in the sand is in the wrong place. I am not for taking this road less traveled, but every once in a while the Hail Mary works, Doug Flute knows that very well.

The only team in Washington that uses a two minute drill is the Redskins. No Hail Mary passes after the clock has run out. A joint meeting between Bush's team and Obama's team to result in a major stimulus package including a solution to the automobile crisis and the freeing of credit from the banks that would stimulate consumer spending that would pass a Democratic controlled Congress to be accomplished in two weeks.
I wonder what the Las Vegas line would be on that one. A bet on the Detroit Lions winning the Super Bowl is more realistic.

There is always opportunity for criticism, that is why we have the first amendment. Whether, Obama is President-elect or President, if he is going to float ideas that require another point of view, we don't wait until he is inaugurated.
Check and balance is a premise of our democracy.

Congressman Paul Broun expressed regret for calling President-elect Obama a Marxist. He said calling Obama a Marxist or a dictator. "Nothing could be further from the truth". And he apologized for saying it. It's ironic that we are well on the expressway toward socialism under this current Republican, compassionate conservative administration. Obama doesn't take office until January 20th. When he becomes our President and you object to his policies there will be opportunities for criticism.

A few short observations: Long careers in congress aren't the path most presidents take to the White House. The least politically experienced president before taking office was Lincoln and I don't think anyone would question his greatness. The years that corporate executives spend rising through the
ranks aren't the same as most of our presidents who tend to move into national prominence in relatively shorter periods of time. This is especially true today where television and the inter-net provide immediate national exposure. Also, the four year presidential cycle necessitates fresh, new and with the current interest and involvement of young people in the electoral process, more youthful candidates than in the past.
Demographics have changed and that's one reason why politics will probably never be the same again. Obama has energized critical voting blocs including those young, first time voters, and also minorities who felt they didn't have an equal stake in the outcome of campaigns. At one time the label "liberal" was considered a legitimate political position. Over the years it became a political liability and the same will now be true of the label "conservative". Just as president Clinton moved his party to the center any future republican candidate will have to abandon extreme right wing identification for any chance of success. McCain would have fared better if he didn't compromise on some of his principals to get support from the conservative wing of his party. There were a significantly large number of conservatives who voted for Obama. It will be interesting to see how the Rush Limboughs and Ann Coulters of the world reposition themselves to deal with this new reality. If they don't adjust they will be preaching to a church whose membership has headed to the exit.
As far as a vote of confidence is concerned that was demonstrated on November 4th.
