The black bus President Obama is touring the Midwest in is symbolic in more ways than one – it looks like a traveling mortuary, or a symbol of the economy.
It is also symbolic of spending, something Obama is accustom to.
It cost the taxpayer $2.2 million. I don’t know what it looks like inside, but it’s bullet proof.
I don’t know what plans the government has for this Black Maria when Obama is finished with his new toy, but I hope it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that Air Force One has – but I do have that uncomfortable feeling that it does.
Obama doesn’t spend much time in the bus, about 45 minutes at a time, it’s a gimmick that some staff person thought up to counter the GOP activity in the same region at this time and Obama bought into it.
Last night, however, the staff booked some 60 rooms in a local hotel, yes even one for the president – I guess the bus is not as comfortable as it looks. And after all in these times booking some rooms is a stimulus onto itself, but an unnecessary expense for the taxpayer footing the bill for a reelection campaign trip.
And to disguise this trip as a business trip to promote jobs and not a campaign trip for Obama’s reelection is an insult to the intelligence of the taxpayer.
I find it interesting that the president went on the road, much like Willie Nelson, with symbolic cool aid, to attack congress, brinkmanship and a partisan DC that he was going to change, without taking any responsibility for his failure of leadership in offering up any plan for the debt crisis while looking for a free ride on the debt ceiling.
This 160-day senator-wonder that became an overnight President, is looking for a miracle, blaming the current state of affairs on ‘bad luck.’
Obama’s Black Bus is also symbolic of the paddy wagon of yesterday called the Black Maria, that was used to transport prisoners to the hoosegow – much like what is being done today to roundup ‘flash mobs’ globally.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe bus cost 1.1 million dollars. There were two buses made, one of which the Republican candidate for the presidency will have access to after nomination.
Obama served in the Illinois senate from 1997-2004. He served in the US Senate from 2005-2008.
Some clarification of facts and numbers: There were two buses used by President Obama in his Midwest political reelection campaign, collectively costing $2.2 million. Each bus cost $1.1 million, both of them being manufactured in Canada, used in the US by Obama while his rhetoric focused on jobs in the US. It is ‘expected’ that one of the buses might be used by the GOP presidential nominee during the 2012 election campaign.
Obama served 3 years of a 6 year term in the US Senate before becoming president. Of the three years served, it is estimated by some based upon the time being present in the Senate Chamber that he spent somewhere between 143 and 160 days on the Senate floor.
Not only will the Republican nominee have use of the bus, they will also have the same Secret Service protection afforded the president. I’m sure there were a lot more cars, vans, motorcycles in addition to the buses when a presidents’ on the road. He’s the president and it’s good to be president.
The Secret Service ordered the buses. If you have a problem with it, take it up with them. I’m sure Obama doesn’t know where those paper clips in the Commerce Department come from. How many Washington politicians, including presidential candidates, use Blackberries. Yes, made in Canada. Obama served three years in the Senate exactly the same number of years that Lincoln served before becoming president. And Lincoln campaigned also.
Let’s assume the 143 and 160 days are accurate. What that says is that the system for campaigning for elective office, especially the presidential campaign is absurd. Don’t single out Obama, he’s only a part of the system that all candidates are trapped in. The campaign is much too long and much too costly. To spend billions of dollars to get votes is not sensible and is certainly at odds with a democratic system of government.
Well, you and Norman believe that those buses ONLY cost 1.1 million dollars each,
I’ll bet that down the road you’ll see that was only part of the cost.
He needs his jets, helicopters, buses and limos to get him to all his vacation spots. He has taken much more time for vacation than many other presidents including George Bush. He already has taken more vacation time than Bush did during his entire term in office.
The Secret Service may have ordered the buses, but they did so on the basis of President Obama making a decision to launch his reelection campaign in the Midwest this week and to do so by bus.
This was a totally unnecessary move based upon the rhetoric he delivered which we have heard enough to deliver his often repeated words ourselves.
I would suggest the second bus was ordered as a political move to deflect criticism from the GOP.
One of the themes used during Obama’s trip through the Midwest was to promote “Made in America”. The frames of the buses were made in Canada. So much for rhetoric from the White House as compared to action. Are we saying those buses couldn’t have been made in the United States of America?
After all I thought the Bradley Tank, and the Humvee was made in America?
So now we have two buses, plus all the costs that accompany them to protect a president on an unnecessary trip, all to be followed by a vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, after which he will deliver a major speech on jobs and the economy.
He will then tell us more of what we have already heard, partisan brinkmanship in Congress is thwarting his spending policies, half of which is controlled by a Democratic Senate.
Where was Obama when he had control of both the House and the Senate with the policies he is espousing now and will deliver after his vacation – more stimulus spending.
Perception is reality and this president’s perception is tanking by the hour, which is reflected in his approval ratings; he is floundering, buying time and is on the road again, but now with expensive buses.
The GOP presidential nominee in 2012 should refuse the use of the bus, if it is offered — it will probably be obsolete anyway.
Walt- Check your facts on vacation time. You’re wrong if you’re talking about Bush Junior.
Don- If you’re suggesting that the Secret Service ordered a second bus to deflect political criticism from the GOP or that the Secret Service ordered a bus solely for Obama’s reelection campaign, is beyond commenting on.
