President Obama went to a town hall meeting yesterday sponsored by CNBC that I’m sure he thought was going to be filled with puff balls designed to help him sell his failed programs prior to the November elections to help his Democratic colleagues, only to be hit with an iconic question from one of his supporters that didn’t want to go back to eating hot dogs and beans.
Right out of the box Velma Hart, a self described wife, veteran, middle class American and mother of two threw a knuckle ball at the president that more than confused him. The president is more comfortable with a basketball.
Even Joy Behar, one of the girls of The View, an alleged comedian, tried to diffuse the pitch this morning by calling Hart a ‘plant’. But with Joy, you never know if she says what she means or means what she says, not too dissimilar to Obama, but the only supporter of the right on The View, Elizabeth Hasselbeck, knows what bullpen she comes from.
Hart’s question: “I am a chief financial officer for a veterans service organization, AmVets here in Washington. I’m also a mother, I’m a wife, I’m an American veteran, and I’m one of your middle-class Americans. And quite frankly, I’m exhausted. I’m exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for . . .”
President interrupts: “Right.”
She goes on, “and deeply disappointed with where we are right now.
“I have been told that I voted for a man who said he was going to change things in a meaningful way for the middle class. I’m one of those people, and I’m waiting, sir. I’m waiting. I don’t feel it yet. And I thought, while it wouldn’t be in great measure, I would feel it in some small measure.
” I have two children in private school. and the financial recession has taken an enormous toll on my family. My husband and I joked for years that we thought we were well beyond the hot dogs and beans era of our lives. But quite frankly, Mr. President, I need you to answer this honestly, is this my new reality?”
This black lady who came to the town hall meeting told it the way it is and wasn’t just speaking for the middle class, she appeared to be speaking for millions of Americans that see it the way she does – that’s why her comments were iconic.
Oh, the president’s answer? He talked about subsidizing federal student loans. Then he fell into a trap he didn’t expect.
“If you have a credit card, which I assume, you do . . .”
Ms Hart answered, “No.”
But then Obama went on to explain what he did for changes in credit cards, mortgages, health care, finance, but failed to discuss bailouts, takeovers of capitalism, increasing the deficit from $1.3 trillion to $13 trillion nor improve the unemployment picture.
Ms. Hart struck a chord for the nation.
Oh, Obama tried to play the blame game card before this question that blew him out of the water stating that the month he was sworn in ‘we lost 750,000 jobs and each month thereafter 600,000 jobs before any of our plans had a chance to take effect.” But fails to address the real unemployment number of more than 17%.
Obama never did address the hot dogs and beans. I guess Michelle is going to do that with more nutritional foods for the children in our schools.
