It is axiomatic in any crisis that you address the conflagration at hand before trying to address the reasons why it happened. But not in the Obama Administration. Thirty two days after the BP oil rig blew and some 5,000 barrels of oil – a conservative estimate – are gushing into the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico daily he forms a presidential commission to investigate why the oil spill happened.
Now you don’t have to be a Harvard graduate or a rocket scientist to realize before such a crisis that you should have federal contingency plans for such a disaster, both by the oil company and the government, before such drilling is allowed in order to address the environmental catastrophe that is taking place and is still playing out.
But no, our illustrious Obama in his wisdom to protect his political derriere, forms a presidential commission to determine why it happened – when he is still in the midst of a crisis.
There is plenty of time for such an investigation, but what are you doing Mr. President to help stop the leak now, other than point your finger in some other direction than yourself?
Obama said the accident was caused by a breakdown in responsibility on the part of London-based BP, Geneva-based Transocean Ltd., the company from which BP leased the rig, and Houston-based Haliburton Co.
“We will continue to hold the relevant companies accountable’ for stopping the leak, repairing the damage, and repaying financial losses, he said.
Obama also said the federal government should be held accountable. I guess we can look at this statement two ways, he could again be blaming federal bureaucrats left over from the Bush administration for improper inspections or perhaps he could be taking some of the blame because it occurred on his watch.
No, I doubt that he meant the latter it’s more likely the former, because that would take a stand-up guy like President Bush, and Obama’s not a stand-up guy. He would rather apologize for the past and point the finger to others in the present rather than shoulder any blame.
The commission is nothing but a diversion, more Chicago-style politics – he has no idea how to put his finger in the dike. And according to some experts, the dike is leaking oil 12 times the estimated rate.
Yet the facts are that this administration approved the site for the BP Deepwater Horizon rig, the spill response plan and was responsible for the oversight of the companies.
But, there was no oversight; in fact inspection schedules that were suppose to take place once a month were not followed by this administration.
This crisis is similar to another – immigration – which we will cover in our next column.
It is time for the people of America to hold this president accountable.
