President Obama became noticeably annoyed at his press conference today when asked by Fox News’ Major Garrett, what took you so long to be ‘appalled and outraged’ about the situation in Iran? Obama snapped back, “I don’t think that’s accurate. We have been consistently consistent.”
Obama used the words ‘appalled and outragged’ in his opening comments today, but it was not the tone that was used when the protests broke out over the election following the results that were announced that Ahamadnejad was re-elected president in a widely disputed election process that drew wide demonstrations and death.
Responding to numerous questions from the media on the difference in tone, Obama said, “From the first day on we have been consistent. We have provided a path where Iran can reach out. It’s up to them to choose a path. We are going to monitor the situation and see how this plays out.”
Obama went on to say that, “We are interested in healing some wounds of some 30 years.”
When asked if he thought the election of Ahamadnejad was legitimate the President said he had no way of knowing. He said it was up to the Iranian people to decide.
He avoided spelling out any consequences in relation to their nuclear arms development by again saying he was going to take a wait and see attitude, noting that he unlike most in the room, was, “not on a 24-hour news cycle.”
When asked to comment on criticisms from congress on his Iranian policies, he twice reiterated that he was the President — as if we didn’t know.
It was clear that the President was playing his Irainian cards close to his vest and not serving up anything but waffling answers to the media without much syrup.
