I really thought that when I reached this stage of my life, you know those golden years, when you have achieved your goals to the best of your ability and you’re on the downside of the upside of life you wouldn’t be moving to a state of economic depression because you’re estate was devalued by some fifty percent.  But I was comforted yesterday when our spending Messiah, President Barack Obama came through with a government website entitled “Getting Through Tough Economic Times” and I thought ‘hallelujah’, ‘Let not my heart be troubled.’

I thought from my profound biblical background this makes a lot of sense.  He is my President and he really cares for me.  I know that he inherited a lot and he wants me to believe that he has a lot on his plate to deal with.  But with all of this, and despite his Trillions of spending, his socialistic policies, the taxes he is going to deliver to all of us, even me in my golden years, and the fact that he is going to be CEO of Corporate America in order save our economy and destroy capitalism — he has convinced me that he cares about me because he developed a website anticipating my economic depression in these difficult times.

So, I went to the website to not allow my heart to be troubled.

What I found was the equivalent of a patient package insert that I might receive from the pharmacy for the drugs that I take.

There was an Eagle on the top of the page and that was comforting, but then the opening comments were somewhat disconcerting, “This guide provides practical advice on how to deal with the effects financial difficulties can have on your physical and mental health — it covers: possible health risks, warning signs, managing stress, getting help, suicide warning signs, other steps you can take.”

I thought to myself that I have taken serious prescription drugs with fewer side effects.  But then they told me what the possible health risks that I might face and they listed, depression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors (over-eating, excessive gambling, spending, etc.), and substance abuse.

Now just like those patient package inserts — that you should really read– there were warning signs.  They talked about my financial problems affecting my emotional or mental well being.  The signs were persistent sadness/crying; excessive anxiety; lack of sleep/constant fatigue; excessive irritability/anger; increased drinking; illicit drug use, including misuse of medications; difficulty paying attention or staying focused; apathy – not caring about things that are usually important to you and not being able to function as well at work, school or home.

Now I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for decades and never remembered a drug with these kinds of side effects.  And it is interesting to note, from my perspective of my golden years, they don’t cover contraindications. What could these be?  Perhaps only Obama knows.

Now they talk about managing stress and this is pap.  They talk about getting help, mostly from agencies that no longer have the money to give it and they suggest you seek out Federal and state government aid.

This all is a pretty big pill to swallow — perhaps we should get rid of the pill and avoid the side effects and ‘Let not our heart to be troubled.’
