I somehow remember a previous president asking the question, what does “is” mean . . . the President was Bill Clinton.
Now, we have a president-elect of the same party saying there was no “inappropriate” discussions with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich about his alleged attempts to sell off Obama’s vacant Senate seat. Although these revelations were strategically disclosed today while Obama was showing off his abs in Hawaii on the beach of Diamond Head and his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who has been involved with the discussions with Blagojevich, was on his way to Africa, we have a situation where the incoming administration is stonewalling the issue, releasing their own investigation of the situation a day before Christmas Eve, and playing games with the media in a period of time of holiday distractions.
Very clever, but not very media savvy.
I can’t help but ask what “inappropriate” means?
Inappropriate may very well mean that no wrong doing was done. And that’s good.
But you see, Obama was more involved than what he admitted originally.
Because, Emanuel had conversations with the governor’s office before Obama gave any names of recommendations for his Senate seat.
It was Valerie Jarett who they were talking about to fill the senate seat.
Somewhere along the way Blagojevich got the message that the Obama staff was not going to play his game of ‘pay for play’ and that’s where the comment came that he was not going to make this appointment for “appreciation’.
And so what we have here are two words ‘inappropriate’ and ‘appreciation’. These words will play out in months to come and Obama will need to reflect upon this pre-inauguration crisis and the way in which it was ‘inappropriately’ handled.
While there may not be any wrongdoing by Obama or his staff — he did not handle his first crisis with an air of ‘transparency’ that he promised, and unfortunately for him and his administration this issue will have legs and will carry well into his first year of office and prove to be a distraction. For after all perception is reality.
