It seems to me to be an oxymoron for Caroline Kennedy to think that she should be appointed to the seat of Sen. Hillary Clinton, should the latter be confirmed as Secretary of State, when she has failed to cast her vote in general elections many times since 1988.
Why would an elitist, from all the good schools and a family rich with political history think by nepotism that she should be appointed to be Senator from New York, especially when her voting record, which has recently been revealed, has been spotty at best. But this is what Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, thinks because she is a mother, a lawyer, an author, an education advocate and from a family who has spent generations in public service, but lacks any political experience.
What happened to those that have paid their dues in the political arena? Are they to be cast aside for the wealthy dynasties, such as the Kennedy’s, Bush’s and Clinton’s?
Somehow it seems this is the way it’s playing out.
Here is this politically inept, shy Caroline, with what has been quoted as having “quiet competence and dignity,” all of a sudden having a soul-food sit-down with the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem. The irony here is that Caroline was AWOL for the primary and general elections at the voting booth in 1994, when Sen. Daniel Moynihan was running for the very same seat Caroline hopes to be appointed to, against the very Rev. Al Sharpton.
According to the New York Daily News this was all part of a round of informal discussions Caroline is holding with state leaders. She barnstormed through Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo and on Thursday met with Brooklyn democratic Leader Vito Lopez at an Italian restaurant in Williamsburg.
The Daily News reported that Kennedy did not pull the lever for any of her fellow Democrats in city primary races for mayor in 1989, 1993 and 1997 and 2005, which Republicans went on to win three out of four times in the general election. And as we said she was AWOL in 1994.
In an Op-Ed piece in the New York Times, Gail Collins said, “My biggest concern about the Kennedy-for-senate boom is that the whole idea sounds as if it had been inspired by telephone conversations between Caroline and her Uncle Ted, followed by encouraging calls from her cousin Robert. We should always be leery of plans that develop during excited phone calls among family members.”
As was pointed out in this Op-Ed piece, Caroline has been successful at raising money for New York City’s public schools and other good causes. But there is a difference in asking for money to buy books for poor children as compared to asking for money to buy 60-second TV commercials about how great you are.
Somehow I don’t think this move sits to well with the Clinton’s, to have a Kennedy who supported an Obama, take a seat that Hillary Clinton might vacate. The irony here is that both women think they are ‘entitled’ to the office they were either running for or to be appointed to because of where they came from.
Interesting, Bill Clinton thinks Chelsea may be as qualified as Caroline. He may be right!
