Throughout President-elect Obama’s campaign for the presidency everyone, the left wing media that supported him, the right wing media that was trying to defeat him but also understand him, his supporters and his adversaries who were trying to define him, will soon know who he is by who he selects for his cabinet.
It’s not exactly the way we should finally be able to define the man that the people elected President, especially after some two-and-a-half years of rhetoric. But that’s what you get when you elect a sliver tongue.
This evening it is being reported that Obama’s top choice for attorney general is Eric Holder, formerly second in charge at the Justice Department, involved with the pardon of fugitive Marc Rich by President Bill Clinton and involved with the Elian Gonzalez fiasco where the justice department charged the Miami home of relatives with guns drawn and returned the boy to Cuba.
Holder publicly apologized for the Rich pardon for what he said was a snap decision that he should have paid more attention to. Had he taken more time to review the case, he would have advised against a pardon, he said.
Of course with a Democratic control of Congress, Obama will get his way in his Cabinet selections.
However, the point here is defining Obama, which we haven’t been able to do despite all his words.
Again, the question that I would raise with Holder, as I have with Obama’s association with Ayers, Wright and Resko, would be judgment.
Now, also sitting on the sidelines waiting for the nod as secretary of state is Hillary Clinton who comes with the baggage of her husband Bill.
Why Barack would want Hillary as secretary of state with Bill’s involvement in his charity foundation, his library contributions, consultation to foreign governments and his high priced speeches around the world is beyond comprehension.
Besides being a conflict of interest waiting to happen, it is somewhat Machiavellian on Obama’s part to give a staunch opponent of the past such a power base to possibly challenge him in 2012.
The definition of Obama is awaiting further cabinet post selection, but so far the pattern is following what I saw during the campaign, poor judgment. We want to give Obama his space during this transition period; however, one must keep in mind it is Obama releasing this information for columnists to comment on.
