Be careful for what you wish Obama, your attacks on Sarah Palin may very well create a backlash equivlent to a back draft in a fire that will evaporate your campaign.
It is unprecedented in presidential campaigns that the Democratic nominee would attack the number two on the Republican ticket, but Sarah Palin is dominating the McCain campaign in a manner that Obma feels threatened.
Examine Obama’s comments of today from Lebanon, Va.:
“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”
“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”
This was an obvious reference to Palin’s comment at the GOP Convention where she made a reference to hockey mom’s by saying, “What’s the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? Lipstick.”
Obama’s surrogates are on the lipstick attack also, Democratic Congressman Russ Carnahan on Tuesday introducing Joe Biden at a campaign event ripped into Palin’s record and then said, “There’s no way you can dress up that record even with a lot of lipstick.”
This is all coming about because according to a Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism found that between Sept. 1 and 7 Palin was a bigger presence in the news than McCain or Obama. She is a hot topic in the mainstream media as well as online despite the attack dogs Obama has unleashed on her to drag up the miniscule of controversy.
The Obama campaign is being careful with its words — although I believe it stepped over the line today — remembering well the backlash that followed his attacks on Hillary Clinton during the nomination fight. But, I believe, he sees a formidable threat in Palin and cannot sit back without comment.
However, he may very well have already stepped over the line — the backlash is already occurring and he may now find himself in a back draft conflagration that evaporates his campaign, the polls are already showing these signs.
