If the Russian invasion of Georgia, coupled with the wars the US is engaged in Iraq and Afganistan and the signal that Vladimir Putin sent to the world when he made the power play in Russia to become Prime Minister, placing Dmitry Mededev as a puppet President, isn’t enough to bring back the draft in the United States, I don’t know what is. This is a signal of the Cold War of the 21st Century.
There are very few politicians in the United States that have any guts, and these gutless political wonders wouldn’t think of even raising the issue of bringing back the draft for it is not a popular concept, especially during a national election, yet we are confronted with the obvious, terrorism and the resurgence of facism and a declining military force. For all practical purposes our present volunteer forces are spread to thin.
Yes, it was our President George W. Bush that looked into the eyes of Putin and said he could see the soul of this man and proclaimed it to be good. They became friends, but Putin played his card as a Russian, proving that his soul was pure KGB.
And what we are seeing in Georgia is pure fascism, as Russia marches with military might across one of our allies.
And what are we doing about it while Georgia provided 2,000 troops in our behalf in our war against Iraq, threatening Russia with diminished relations with the United States?
The United States needs to build up its military might at this time, perhaps more than ever. And the liberal candidate Barack Obama is not the man to accomplish this task at this time in history.
His military experience is nil, his foreign policy experiece is void, his experience to handle the job does not meet the job description.
We can’t deal with these issues on charisma.
Today there are some 71 countries that require the draft, 12 of them are in Europe — including Russia which has recently expanded its draft to two years for all males and has abolished student exemptions. Even Switzerland an alleged neutral country, which has not been to war, has a draft followed by compulsory reserve service for all males. And it is one of the few countries where the draft is popular.
With respect to the United States we are dealing with an all volunteer military force that has served us well up until this point, but the prospects for the future do not look good for a volunteer military while we face both terrorism and Russia’s fascism.
It is again time for we the people to step up to the plate and do what we need to do for our country. It is time to bring back the draft.
