I have trouble with flawed characters and characters of poor judgment.
Scott McClellan, the former White House Press Secretary, of little note, is one with a flawed character and little judgment, unfortunately the Bush White House didn’t recognize this before they put him in the Press Secretary position.
He reminds me much of the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Barack Obama, who is also of flawed character and poor judgment.
Now flawed character with poor judgment coupled with a lack of loyalty is not an obituary that I would want to write upon the demise of anyone.
But that is Scott McClellan’s legacy.
You see it is axiomatic that if you are flacking for an administration, a personality, a corporation, an association and on and on, you are an advocate for that point of view. It is no different than what lawyers do in a court room, or for that matter elsewhere, or accountants do in tax disputes, or lobbyists do for a variety of interests, both government, corporate, non-profit and foreign interests.
It is what is known as a particpatory democracy — that’s what we are all about in this democracy. Different forces pushing for different points of view, without anyone necessarily being right — but searching for a consensus.
What is troubling about McClellan is that he is kissing and telling rather than telling and kissing. You see if you don’t like the position you are advocating than cut bait and run, and call a spade a shovel when you are disenchanted with the direction for which you are advocating a position.
He didn’t do that, he wrote his book, got a publicity bump, faded away as he should, only to come back and allege that he and the Bush Administration fed talking points to Fox News exclusively.
This was denied by Fox anchors and columnists. And very frankly, having been on both sides of the media game as a journalist and a public relations person, this is not what is done. You spread your talking points across all facets of the media — it’s a shotgun approach not a single bullet exclusive.
McClellan’s approach is flawed in its basic premise and is not credible.
Very frankly, I feel somewhat sorry for the poor soul that he put himself in this unfortunately incredible position.
