Bill Clinton didn’t bring any class to the White House when he was President for eight years and Hillary Clinton proved yesterday that she wouldn’t either.
Clinton played her last hand and shot herself in the foot when she tried to justify staying in the race for the Democratic nomination for President against the lead nominee Barack Obama when she said, “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”
The comment created an uproar across the nation and on the internet.
New York Daily News Columnist Michael Goodwin said, “It’s like Tanya Harding’s kneecapping has come to politics. Only the senator from New York has more lethal fantasies than a nutty skater.”
It is well know that the Clinton’s would go to any length to get this nomination, but it was most revealing yesterday when she said she was staying in the race in the event some nut kills Obama.
It is appalling and sick.
After realizing she stepped over the line she expressed regret, saying “The Kennedy’s have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy,” making reference to Senator Kennedy’s brain tumor. She said, “I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive.”
However her comment targeted Obama, and she made no apology to him.
Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign said her statement “was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign.”
Privately, aides to Obama were furious about the remark.
Threats to Obama have been a reality, so much so that Secret Service gave him protection last May, before it was afforded to any other presidential candidate. Clinton had protection then in her capacity as a former first lady. Obama’s wife voiced concerns about his safety before he was elected to the Senate.
Clinton’s comment was in the context of discussions about her political future in light of the math that says Obama has the nomination wrapped up. It was made before the editorial board of The Sioux Falls Argus Leader and was fed to the national media and the New York Post was the first to break the story. She said that some people whom she did not name were trying to push her out of the race, but noted that historically many races had gone on longer than hers.
“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? she said. “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”
Apparently this wasn’t the first time she made this comment. It was made to Time magazine in March.
The Clintons, both Hillary and Bill, have raised everything to get back in the fold — from racism, sexism, slavery and political killings in Zimbabwe — everything but the real issues.
Nevertheless these distractions from the real issues haven’t move the needle in her favor.
In fact it has been reported that Bill is working behind the scenes to get her the vice presidential nod.
These are not classy individuals with good judgment which they have proven over and over again.
Clinton was waiting for Obama to stumble, but in the heat of the battle, he remained the cool one, and it was she that made the colossal blunder. It’s time for her to say good night.
