“I took my troubles down to Madame Rue.

You know that gypsy with the gold capped tooth

She’s got a pad down on 34th and Vine.

Selling little bottles of Love Potion #9

I told her that I was a flop with chicks. I’ve been disgraced since 1956

She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign.

She said what you need is Love Potion number 9.”

Well the above two verses of the song sung by the Beatles, The Clovers and The Searchers and written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller is not too far off from the hypocritical revelation of today that NY Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer, called the “Sheriff of Wall Street” and proclaimed “Eliot Ness,” may very well have been Client #9 and  has been accused of paying for sex with a high-priced call girl.

Today he said at a press conference with his wife standing by his side, “I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself,” said the 48-year-old-father of three teenage girls. “I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.”

He did not take any questions from the media.

According to the Associated Press, Spitzer was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet at a Washington hotel room with a prostitute from a call-girl business known as the Emperors Club VIP, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the on going investigation.

The governor has not yet been charged.

As a prosecutor Spitzer clashed with Wall Street and also prosecuted prostitution rings in New York State, which makes the hypocrisy of this case so outlandish.

Here is this Democratic defender of law and righteousness with his sword outstretched charging to right the wrongs of New York State, with his Princeton and Harvard degrees, and now being hoisted on his own petard.

He was elected governor of New York in 2006 and during his time in office, he has proposed a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in New York and issued an executive order allowing illegal aliens to be issued driver licenses, which attracted national controversy.

He was admonished in 2007 for his administration’s involvement in ordering State Police to record the whereabouts of State Senate majority leader Joseph L. Bruno.

He has come out in support of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination for President and is a super delegate to the Democratic Convention.

Clinton refused to comment on the issue.

He has not resigned as Governor, but speculation is that that is imminent.  Insiders say that he is probably negotiating a plea bargain with the Federal government and that he will resign as Governor as part of the deal.

Ironically the high-end prostitution ring that he negotiated with for a fling the day before Valentine’s Day in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC was the Emperors Club VIP . . . and now the Emperor has no clothes.
